It was year 2008, Indian Premier League was just in its initial stage. Players from Pakistan were allowed to play in IPL back then. It was the 35th match of this edition when the famous Rawalpindi Express from Pakistan was asked to debue for KKR and boy he did that in style.
Having started their campaign with an emphatic 140 run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders found themselves in a precarious situation with a string of losses. Meanwhile Delhi Daredevils were having a very good iting in this edition of IPL.
In the Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to at first. Their decision to bat first was not implemented well as in the power play they managed to score 34 runs with Akash Chopra already out. The sensible innings of Salman Butt and David Hussey took the score to 133 which was in some terms defendable at those times. Their was no particular performance in the bowling department but all the bowlers bowled economically hence were able to restrict them to a modest total of 133.
Having bowled well Delhi Daredevils might have had an upper hand at the end of first innings, but little did they know that Shoaib Akhtar was going to wreak havoc that day. He bowled 3 overs giving away just 11 runs and taking the scalps of the openers Virender Sehwag, AB de Villiers as well as of the dangerous batting duo of Manoj Tiwari and Gautam Gambhir. In his spell, he completely broke the backbone of Delhi Daredevils which eventually lead to them getting all-out at a meagre 110. Kolkata Knight Riders won by 23 runs, which was a huge margin considering the runs they scored in the first innings. Shoaib Akhtar was adjuged the Man of the Match for his incredible bowling.
Shoiab Akhtar recently auctioned this Golden Knight Helmet and donated the proceedings for COVID19 causes.
