ICC updated the ODI Men’s Team ranking this month and the biggest gainers of this were the Black Caps. They reclaimed the top spot. The top-ranked team England slipped to the 4th position while Indian Team also slipped from second to third place.
To understand the fact why were these changes made in the ranking even though their were no matches played, we have to understand the process of calculation of rating based on which the ranking is prepared. ICC calculates the rating points for the team according to the matches played in last two years. Every April month the data from the penultimate year is removed which eventually makes the changes as the gainers will the one who have performed relatively poor than the ones who are the biggest losers of the rating points.
It is an auspicious achievement for the Black Caps as they have played fantastic cricket in the last few years. They have reached the semi-final of the 2015 WC and the final of the 2019 WC. Of course, the series if the event that followed and finally concluded the 2019 WC Final were dramatic and debatable at the same time, but it were the kiwis who were robbed of their maiden WC Title.
In the last two years, we have witnessed the Black Caps whitewash India and Bangladesh. They defeated India 3-0 in the 2019/20 series and defeated Bangladesh with the same margin in the 2020/21 series. The ones who are the constant performers with the bat are Tom Latham, Kane Williamson & Devon Conway. The top-ranked ODI Bowler Trent Boult also had a great outing with the ball which enabled the Black Caps to maintain their supremacy over the opposition teams.
One of the noticeable chases that this team has done in the recent past is the one when they chased down 348 against a strong Indian Team on 5th Feb 2020. The credit for maintaining the winning tendency for the team should go to the skipper in Kane Williamson who has found ample support from his team in making his team victorious.
This team currently has Martin Guptil, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor among its active players who are arguably the Top Order that New Zealand has ever produced. In Colin de Grandhomme and Jimmy Neesham they have two more sufficiently capable all-rounders while Trent Boult is simply best in the business. With players like them we hope that the Black Caps continue their successful run.
