Contenders for vice-captaincy role in T20I for Team India

Sep 19, 2021

Virat Kohli had announced that he will be stepping down from the captaincy position in T20I after WCT20. It will be a straightforward decision to hand over the captaincy to current vice-captain Rohit Sharma. Now who will be made deputy to Rohit Sharma is the hot topic going around, so let’s take a look at the possible contenders

KL Rahul

The most probable player who might be handed over the vice-captain role after T20 WC. Rahul is a regular member of the current squad who plays all formats and he had already led the Punjab Kings Ipl franchise for 2 years. As a leader, his performance with the bat speaks large volumes. He has matured a lot both as a batsman and as a leader in the Ipl circuit. It is a timely situation for BCCI to appoint Rahul as deputy to Sharma so that he can learn a lot of leadership qualities under him. Once Rohit hangs his boots in the future he can take over the skipper role.

Rishabh Pant

He is a player who was spoken about a lot in the past 12 months period for his improved wicket-keeping skills, consistent batting performances, and playing crucial knocks under pressure. But he is still a work in progress for leadership roles. He had captained DC in April for the first time in the absence of regular skipper Shreyas Iyer. He had made tactical bowling changes and selected a team based on the requirements of the pitches. Still, a very good young player who can be groomed well by involving him in the captaincy jobs in the near future.

Shreyas Iyer

He had captained the Ranji team and DC in Ipl in the recent past. He is a cool customer and handles pressure situations with ease. He had gained a lot of tips from Ganguly and Ponting with whom he was working in the Delhi capitals setup.

As a captain, he had scored enough runs and took some bold decisions for the DC team. Since he is returning from a long injury layoff, it would boost his confidence if team management decides to hand over vice-captain duties to Shreyas Iyer.

Jasprit Bumrah

It has been already more than 4 years where he made a start to his stellar career. All format player and match-winner on his own. He is the dark horse in the race for the vice-captaincy role. Don’t be surprised if he takes over the vice-captain role from his MI skipper. He is having all the skillset to become a very good leader be it for calm and composed nature, good communication skills and he gels well with the team members. The Vice-captain role will him a complete player.

Surya Kumar Yadav

In recent times, his constant performance with the bat earned him a national call-up, eventually, he made it into the Indian cricket team for the T20 WC. He is one of the right candidates to become vice-captain of India in T20I. He is not new to the captaincy roles, he is captained in the domestic circuit that will help him, to do so better.
