The Retirement of Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dhanushka Gunathilaka has been a great shock to the Fans and the Board. Nobody expected such news from Bhanuka who was in great touch in the latest series to announce his retirement from International Cricket. Followed by Gunathilaka who was banned by SLC for breaching the COVID protocols announced his retirement from Test Cricket a day after when his Ban was reduced to six months.
Sri Lankan Cricket is already going through a bad patch. And these unexpected retirement is going to hurt them more. Keeping the future as a concern SLC came up with the following guidelines so that this kind of retirement can be known earlier.
- If players choose to retire from international cricket, namely a requirement to provide SLC with three months’ notice of their intention to retire.
- A six-month waiting period post-retirement to obtain a NOC to play in overseas franchise tournaments.
- Players need to play in at least 80% of domestic matches in a season if they are to be eligible for the Lanka Premier League.
Fans were happy with such a decision hope such action can be taken by all the board so that the players will plan accordingly.
